Soft bags
Fabric bags are usually forgiving when clearance is tight and are easy to carry up stairs. Look for a rigid enough base, useful handles, a zipper that does not snag, and dimensions that match your actual opening.
Rolling or lidded bins
Hard bins protect better against dust and accidental crushing. Wheels help on smooth floors, but they can add height and may catch on rugs or bed legs. A lid is useful only if it remains reachable.
The clearance test: measure the lowest point—not the average height—then leave room to grip the container. If you need to drag the bed or lift the mattress every time, the theoretical capacity is not practical capacity.
What belongs underneath?
